Caberfae Peaks Ski Patrol – An affilliate of the National Ski Patrol System

Est. 1939

Awards

It’s no joke when someone says “Award-Winning”!!!

2006 – National Best Small Alpine Ski Patrol

Caberfae Peaks Patrol earns “Best in the Nation”
(Wausau, WI– September 9, 2006 )  Dr. James Deweerd, Chairman of the National Ski Patrol (NSP) presented Cadillac’s Caberfae Peaks Ski Patrol with the accolade “National Outstanding Small Alpine Patrol” at the organization’s Central Division meeting, held here Saturday evening.
Receiving the award was Patrol Representative Deann Jenkins.  The patrol consists of 36 volunteers who provide rescue and first aid services to the public at Caberfae Peaks.  They competed against patrols across the country and many areas of Europe and the Far East.
“We were absolutely stunned to learn of the award”, said Jenkins who is also principal at Mesick Middle school.  “Our nomination was submitted before and received the designation for the Central Division in 2003.  We were thrilled to be named again in 2006, but had no idea that it (the nomination) would make it all the way to National.”
Members of the Patrol are almost exclusively volunteers from the local area and around the state who serve on weekends and holidays when the skiing population mushrooms.  “Our staff would be really swamped without these volunteers”, stated Timothy P Meyer, Mountain Manager.  “It’s good to see the NSP acknowledging what we here at Caberfae Peaks have known for a long time—we have a superb patrol.” he added.
In addition to providing first aid, the patrol prides itself in being visible representatives of area management that work hard to enhance the winter sports experience for Caberfae Peaks’ customers.  “There’s a lot more to this job than splinting limbs and bringing the injured to the patrol room.” according to patroller Mark Featherston.  “It’s things like reuniting lost kids with their parents, handing out trail maps, or even recommending local eateries to our visitors.”
Founded in 1938 by Minot C. (Minnie) Dole, the National Ski Patrol presently has over 26,000 members.  It was started at a time when few ski venues had any provisions for dealing with injured skiers.  The organization now provides training in various disciplines from Mountain Travel and Rescue to Avalanche Fundamentals as well as their acclaimed first aid course “Outdoor Emergency Care”.
